As multiple pregnancies (twins or more) carry a higher risk for preterm birth and medical problems, such as pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes, the Multiples Program at Evergreen addresses the specific needs of this growing population. By optimizing maternal nutrition and reducing risks by education and frequent evaluation during the pregnancy, the program aims at a longer gestation and higher birth weight for healthier babies.
A perinatologist and a RN meet with families individually to discuss general suggestions for a healthy pregnancy, including: nutritional and weight gain recommendations, prenatal education, links to community resources, as well as any problems unique to the individual pregnancy. A general plan for the pregnancy is created, including frequency of ultrasound evaluations (typically every 2 to 4 weeks, depending upon the trimester, the type of placenta(s), and maternal medical complications), and steps to help prevent premature delivery.
Evergreen’s program is one of the very few established multiples programs in the United States. Together with the advanced care for Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS), it makes Evergreen Hospital Medical Center a top resource in the Puget Sound area—if not the Pacific Northwest—for the care of multiples.
