How to get your baby’s Social Security number
When you are giving the hospital information for your baby's birth certificate, your baby's Social Security number may be the last thing on your mind. But the easiest way to get the number and a card is to apply at birth.
The hospital staff member who handles the birth certificate will ask you if you want to apply for a Social Security number for your child. You will need to provide the Social Security numbers of both parents, so be sure you have those numbers available. If you do not apply for the baby's number at this time, later you will have to:- Locate your local Social Security office.
- Provide the Social Security numbers of both parents.
- Show evidence of your child's age, identity and citizenship.
- Show proof of both parent's identity.
For that reason, it's a lot easier just to provide the parents' numbers when the birth certificate is filled out.
Why does a newborn need a Social Security number?
The main reason is so you can claim your baby as a dependent on your income tax return. If you don't have the number, you can't claim the deduction.
As she grows, your child will need her own Social Security number for a variety of reasons:- To open a bank account
- To buy savings bonds
- To obtain medical coverage
- To receive various kinds of government benefits or services
There is no charge for a Social Security number and card. For more information, call the Social Security Administration's toll-free number: 1- (800) 772-1213.
