Exercise? But I haven’t a thing to wear!
It can be hard enough to motivate yourself to exercise during pregnancy, but when your tights are just too tight, a large tee shirt feels small, and the sight of a waistband makes you cringe, exercise can get awkward. Fortunately a few maternity clothing makers are bringing out lines of practical, comfortable, attractive workout clothing designed to meet your needs through Month Nine.
Look for them in maternity shops and on the web. Meanwhile, heed these clothing tips from other active pregnant women.- Unitards, particularly those sized for maternity, are the choice of some women. Their stretchiness keeps you comfortable all nine months (even beyond), and they don't get too tight in the rear or the thighs, where many pregnant women put on extra pounds. They also create an attractive clean line and can easily be topped with an oversize Tee for modesty or warmth.
- Separates are preferred by many expectant moms. Wearing separate tops (tanks or tees) and bottoms (bike shorts or leggings) can expedite those frequent trips to the bathroom.
- Breast comfort is key. A jog bra may do the trick for light exercise, but as your breasts enlarge, look around for a couple of serious, good quality sports bras with lots of support.
- Extra thick socks and soft-shoe inserts help keep the feet comfortable. If your feet are pinching, don't put off getting a new pair of athletic shoes (many women's feet grow during pregnancy). Wearing the right shoes for your sport will help with balance, coordination, and comfort.
- Fabrics: Cotton/spandex blends keep you drier than 100% cotton. Supplex or supplex/lycra blends are super-stretchy and are good at wicking moisture as well. But clothing made from these fabrics may need to be hand-washed and line-dried.
- Swimmers, get a supportive swimsuit designed for pregnancy.
