Library Articles: Baby Feeding
Babies’ best bet is breast
- The verdict is in when it comes to breastfeeding. There are a whole variety of reasons why breastfeeding is superior to formula.
Baby can thrive on bottle-feeding
- If you bottle-feed, you have several choices to make about the type of formula you use.
Breastfeeding problems can be overcome
- Many women experience difficulty with breastfeeding. Engorgement and cracked or sore nipples are common. Mastitis may require a provider's treatment.
Burping can ease baby spit-up problems
- Most babies occasionally spit up because they have swallowed air or eaten too much. Frequent burping can ease the problem.
Learning breastfeeding techniques ensures success
- Your baby will begin nursing shortly after birth. There are several holds and techniques to use. Feed baby on demand, don't watch the clock, and forget about bottles and pacifiers until baby is an accomplished breastfeeder.
Tongue-tied infants can have trouble with breastfeeding
- There is a rare condition called "tongue tie" that can keep a baby from breastfeeding successfully and that can cause sore nipples in a nursing mother. There is a simple procedure to correct the problem.
Unravel the mystery of food labels
- Food labels can help you maintain a healthy diet throughout your pregnancy and after. Labels may seem confusing at first, but looking at portion size and the "% daily value" can help you stay on track.
You can breastfeed after you return to work
- The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies get their mother's milk for the first year of life. That can be challenging even for at-home moms. But what about those who work outside the home? It's possible, with a little practice and planning.
