Your 3-month-old: Alive and kicking
Your increasingly sophisticated baby is finding more ways to respond to her environment besides crying; you might even hear her first laugh! The best news is that, by 3 months, some infants are sleeping through the night or are down to one night feeding.
Most babies gain 1 to 2 pounds in their third month. Most 3-month-old girls weigh between 9 (very small) and 14 (very large) pounds. Boys weigh in between 9 ½ and 16 ½ pounds.
By 3 months of age, a typical baby will be able to:- Roll over (never leave her alone on a changing table!).
- Express happiness or sadness with the entire body, by wiggling, kicking and vocalizing.
- Raise and lower both arms with equal strength.
- Straighten the legs and exhibit much stronger kicks.
- Hold the head up for a minute or more when held upright.
- Open and close the hands frequently and keep hands open for extended periods.
- Reach toward moving objects (such as a mobile) and grab, hold, and try to put objects in the mouth.
- Play with the feet (having just discovered them!).
- Demonstrate some patience (such as when feeding is slightly delayed).
- Make gurgling, cooing, and babbling noises, perhaps laughing for the first time.
- Distinguish between facial expressions and their meanings.
- Respond to the sound of your voice and recognize you by sight.
- Take an interest in activity around him. He may let go of the nipple during feeding from time to time, just to look around.
