Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) provides clinical education for theological students, parish clergy and select lay people with the goal to enhance their pastoral care skills. CPE is based on an action/reflection model of learning, which encourages the practice of ministry under the supervision of a certified supervisor. CPE fosters growth in the areas of Pastoral Reflection, Pastoral Formation and Pastoral Competence with emphasis upon the integration of one’s life experience in dialogue with one’s understanding of ministry.
The Objectives of Clinical Pastoral Education
CPE includes the goals of Pastoral Reflection, Pastoral Formation and Pastoral Competence. In addition, Pastoral Specialization and Consultation may be offered when appropriate. Each intern is expected to make use of the action/reflection model to identify ministry skills that enhance Reflection, Formation and Competence in the care for and ministry with others.
