227-bed Evergreen Hospital Medical Center and Evergreen Hospice Services serve as the primary clinical sites for students. Those involved in CPE will minister in the hospital and with both the inpatient and home care hospice patients.
Chaplain interns work as a part of the health care team to provide spiritual care to patients, their families and to staff. Those involved in the CPE program may expect:
- Daily pastoral visits with patients and family members
- Night and weekend on-call responsibility for the medical center
- Involvement with a multidisciplinary health care team
- Opportunity for personal and ministerial reflection and evaluation
- Experiences with acute care hospitalized patients and hospice patients
The Components of the Program
Feedback and evaluation are provided through various group and individual sessions:
- Didactic Seminars – presentations from health care professionals and ministry specialists regarding different aspects of ministry and pastoral care.
- Theological Reflection Seminars – presentations made by chaplain interns regarding how one’s theology and spiritual awareness is shaped by the ministry provided in this setting.
- Case Presentations – review of verbatims of pastoral visits shared in the peer group and with CPE supervisor for feedback.
- Worship Seminars – opportunity to conduct weekly chapel service and devotions with other colleagues
- Group Process – sessions providing an environment where relationships between colleagues and supervisor can be worked out and shared in a safe and supportive fashion
- Nursing unit rounds – participation as a member of the team with a multidisciplinary group (i.e. nursing, medicine, social services, ancillary services) to evaluate and create treatment plan for patients
