PROFILE
The Special Care Nursery (SCN) Level II provides health services for newborns requiring specialized care immediately after birth and anticipatory care planning for high-risk pregnancy.
UNIT FOCUS
Medical care for newborn infants, primarily issues associated with prematurity, delayed feeding cues, mild respiratory problems, jaundice or infections.
PATIENT CARE DELIVERY MODEL
Family-centered care in semi-private and single-room nursery suites provide a quiet environment for optimal healing. Sophisticated monitoring equipment and life-saving support systems plus the full resources of the medical center augment patient care. Staff provides family members with information and skills to participate in their baby’s care.
TEAM MEMBERS
SCN Level II staff is comprised of registered nurses specializing in the care of premature and sick infants. Neonatal services are provided in collaboration with Children’s Hospital & Regional Medical Center and the University of Washington Academic Medical Center. Specialized lactation consultants manage infant feeding issues.
SCHEDULING PRACTICES
Around-the-clock patient care, seven days a week by SCN nurses and neonatologists on-call.
STAFF ORIENTATION
New hires attend unit orientation.
EDUCATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Successful completion of regularly scheduled skills labs is required. New hire training determined per clinical nurse manager and assistant clinical nurse manager of Children’s Services.
