Evergreen Hospital Medical Center
PROFILE
The Postpartum Care Center is an outpatient clinic with four private exam rooms for postpartum patients and infants, two to four days old. Hours of operation are Monday-Saturday, with first appointment at 8:30 with last appointment at 3:30. Appointments generally last one hour.
UNIT FOCUS
The timing of the Postpartum Care Center visit – usually when the baby is two to four days old – provides a clinical ‘safety net’ between birth and the typical follow-up visits with the mother’s physician/midwife and the baby’s health care provider.
PATIENT CARE DELIVERY MODEL
Registered Nurse postpartum specialists will do a full physical assessment of the mother and infant, noting conditions that are not within normal range and arranging appropriate follow-up and referrals as needed. Nurses also provide helpful tips regarding baby care and emotional support for new families. Referring to community programs as needed.
TEAM MEMBERS
The Postpartum Care Center staff is comprised of registered nurses who are especially trained as postpartum nurse specialists and are IBCLC certified or IBCLC eligible.
SCHEDULING PRACTICES
Appointments are made for a family prior to their discharge from the Family Maternity Center. The appointment coincides with the baby’s day of age between two to four days or earlier if determined by medical provider. An appointment time is given to families with a follow up reminder call to them the day prior to appointment.
STAFF ORIENTATION
New hire orientation is preceptor based and individualized as determined by RN previous experience in mother/ baby nursing with focus on breastfeeding.
