UNIT FOCUS
The Comprehensive Procedure Center and Evergreen Pain Management Clinic, part of the Surgical Services Department, is a vital component of Evergreen Hospital Medical Center. The unit is supportive of the mission, beliefs and practices of the institution, and dedicated to the provision of holistic, comprehensive and visionary care. The focus of the unit is to provide excellent patient care to our patients by working with the interdisciplinary team of care providers.
PATIENT CARE DELIVERY MODEL
Within the Department of Surgical Services, the patient and his/her family are the central focus of all care activities. The nurses provide patient-focused, individualized care to each patient and serve as their advocate throughout their hospital stay. The patient care delivery model is highly collaborative and inclusive of all members in the procedure room team, including the physician, nurses, and patient. The practice of nursing by registered nurses encompasses responsibility for the roles of the caregiver, leader, teacher, mentor, consultant, change agent and researcher. Fulfillment of these roles is necessary to meet the goal of holistic care for all patients.
TEAM MEMBERS
The unit provides specialized nursing care and service to patients whose conditions require medical intervention, pain management or endoscopy related medical care. Patients admitted to this area are cared for by registered nurses. The staff provides a caring and safe environment for patients and their families. The Comprehensive Procedure Center and Evergreen Pain Management Clinic team is comprised of the Surgical Services director, unit manager, assistant manager, staff, pain clinic and GI physicians. We recognize that the provision of health care is dependent on a staff and environment that is dynamically responsive to health care needs.
Comprehensive Procedure Center and Evergreen Pain Management Clinic is staffed at all times by registered nurses. A charge nurse is also covering the unit each day. The department is staffed according to patient care needs, as assessed by the charge nurse and manager. Personnel for this unit are selected for skill in triage of patient care needs, knowledge of and experience with special medical/surgical procedures and equipment, ability to handle emergencies and procedural equipment, ability to accurately assess and interpret a patient’s condition and to work positively with families. ACLS and PALS along with 2 years of med-surg experience are required and endoscopy, pain service and infusion experience are preferred.
SCHEDULING PRACTICES
Staff schedules are driven by the need to support patients 24/7. We enjoy a permanent day and evening staff with 8 and 10 hours shifts. Call is posted each month and staff voluntarily sign up. We try to be flexible with scheduling in order to accommodate personal and educational needs.
STAFF ORIENTATION
All hospital staff attends the Evergreen Healthcare orientation for two days at new hire. The nursing staff also attend a skills lab at the time of hire and again yearly to keep up to date. The Comprehensive Procedure Center and Evergreen Pain Management Clinic provides a person who is new to the unit with an orientation designed to inform the individual of his/her responsibilities in the delivery of patient care and how to fulfill these in the department. The unit also provides for education and training designed to maintain the knowledge and skills of all personnel. Education is based upon patient population, type and natures of procedures/infusions, staff needs, advances in healthcare technology, findings from performance measurement/improvement activities, and findings from peer/management reviews. Registered nurses will learn to administer procedural sedation and to care for patients undergoing routine gastrointestinal and pain management procedures. After clinical competency is established, nurses will learn more advanced procedures, such as Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
Each new hire’s education program is designed with learning objectives based on performance expectations which address the knowledge, skills, and behaviors appropriate to the individual’s job responsibilities and performance. The design of the education and training provided utilizes cognitive, psychomotor and other methods to accomplish the learning objectives. The learning is then assessed through self-assessment tools as well as thorough assessment of performance in actual situations. The effectiveness and appropriateness of orientation, training, and education provided for the unit is evaluated through its quality assessment and improvement activities.
EDUCATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
In addition to the staff orientation, the Comprehensive Procedure Center and Evergreen Pain Management Clinic leadership team is committed to continual education for staff. This education and development may occur at in-services, where we discuss new and upcoming equipment and/or procedures. The physicians and/or vendors generally give these in-services to staff.
We support staff driven practice and unit improvement ideas. The leadership team collaborates with staff to discuss practice and/or process concerns within the unit and development resolutions and process improvements to improve future outcomes.
In addition, certification is encouraged in all areas, but is not considered mandatory.
