PROFILE
The Breastfeeding Center is an outpatient clinic featuring private exam rooms for consultations with breastfeeding families. There is also a retail store featuring baby products and breastfeeding supplies including a Lactina breast pump rental station and professional bra-fitting. A lending library of parenting resources including DVD/video and books is available in the clinic area.
UNIT FOCUS
The Breastfeeding Center strives to provide a program of support, education and professional advice to help women and babies succeed at breastfeeding.
PATIENT CARE DELIVERY MODEL
RN lactation consultants offer individual consultations to assess infant feeding styles and help solve breastfeeding problems.
TEAM MEMBERS
The Breastfeeding Center staff is comprised of registered nurses who are board certified in lactation consulting (IBCLC – Internationally Board Certified Lactation Consultant)
SCHEDULING PRACTICES
Staff scheduling provides coverage for clinic appointments, facilitating daily baby care classes on the Family Maternity Center unit, rounding to maternity inpatients and providing telephone consultations. The appointments are self scheduled or referred by the Postpartum Care Center or other medical providers. Visits are by appointment only.
STAFF ORIENTATION
Breastfeeding orientation is preceptor based and individualized.
EDUCATIONAL AND DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES
Community outreach and collaboration with breastfeeding promotional organizations is extensive. Participation in annual conferences and continuing education is ongoing. A support group for women experiencing unexpected outcomes with breastfeeding is facilitated by clinic staff.
