Purpose
To promote integration of knowledge and skills essential to nursing assessment, promotion and evaluation of fetal well-being during labor.
This Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course builds on the knowledge and skills of experienced nurses and physicians. It was designed for registered nurses with a minimum of six months of clinical nursing experience using fetal heart assessment and monitoring technology in an intrapartum setting. It is not an introductory level fetal monitoring course.
Description
The IFMC focuses on the application of essential fetal heart monitoring and skills in intrapartum nursing practice. This comprehensive two-day course includes the following elements: an analysis of case scenarios requiring synthesis of key principles pertinent to the physiologic basis of fetal heart monitoring: tracing interpretation; nursing intervention; verbal and written communication skills; skill sessions including discussion, demonstration and testing of fetal heart rate auscultation skill; Leopold’s maneuver; placement of an intrauterine pressure catheter and spiral electrode; communication and documentation.
Objectives
- Demonstrate the decision-making process necessary for proper selection and verification of fetal heart monitoring techniques.
- Analyze fetal heart rate patterns, uterine activity and their implications for fetal well-being.
- Correlate indicated clinical interventions with related maternal-fetal physiology.
- Describe the role and responsibilities of the professional nurse in the use of fetal heart monitoring in intrapartum care.
- Simulate the psychomotor skills used in fetal heart monitoring.
- Communicate verbal and written data about patient status and verify accountability.
Continuing Education Credit
Those who attend and participate in the entire course will be awarded 18.3 hours of CE or 15.25 hours of CME (no partial credit will be awarded). Competence validation will be awarded when all skill stations are successfully completed.
