Kyphoplasty is a new surgical treatment for vertical compression fractures, most often resulting from osteoporosis. It is a minimally-invasive procedure where the surgeon carefully inflates an orthopedic balloon inside the fractured vertebra to raise the collapsed portion of the bone. The balloon is removed, and the cavity is filled with a cement-like material that helps stabilize the bone, straighten the spine and provide dramatic relief from the pain. Kyphoplasty involves a very small incision and a hospital stay of just a day or two.

Surgery is the oldest form of cancer treatment, and is used to remove localized cancer, such as a tumor. Although it remains an important part of cancer treatment today, surgery is now typically combined with other types of treatment such as radiation, chemotherapy and hormone therapy to achieve greater success.
Surgical procedures for cancer are divided into the following categories:
- Diagnostic: when a tissue biopsy is required to confirm the diagnosis of cancer and help guide treatment planning. These include aspiration, needle, excision and incision biopsies.
- Staging: when a biopsy and/or definitive surgery is needed to determine the extent of the cancer
- Definitive: removal of the tumor
- Preventative: to avoid the development of cancer; for example, removal of both breasts in a woman deemed to be at extraordinarily high risk of developing breast cancer
